Thin Content: How Much Text Does a Page Really Need?
Thin is not short. A 300-word page that fully answers its question is fine; a 2,000-word page that circles one is thin, and padding is how sites get there.

There is no minimum word count
Google has said this directly and often, and it remains one of the most damaging SEO myths because it is actionable in the wrong direction. There is no threshold at 300, 600, 1,000 or 2,000 words below which a page cannot rank.
What tools report as a word-count warning is a heuristic, not a rule. It is a reasonable prompt to look at a page and a terrible target to optimise toward, because the obvious way to satisfy it is padding — which makes the page worse for the reader while satisfying the checker.
What thin content actually means
Only the last two are about length at all, and one of them is thin because it is long. That is the clearest evidence that word count is measuring the wrong thing.

Judging a page honestly
The last question is the one that identifies most thin content in practice. Pages created to occupy a keyword rather than answer a question read that way, and readers notice before Google does.
- Does it answer the question someone searched, completely, without them needing another page?
- Is there anything here that is not on the competing pages — data, examples, a decision the reader has to make?
- Would you send this to a colleague, or would you apologise for it first?
- If you removed the introduction and the summary, is anything left?
- Does it exist because a reader needs it, or because a keyword had volume?
What thin pages cost you
Individually, little — a thin page that nobody visits is mostly harmless. At scale it is different: a large set of low-value pages dilutes the signals across your site, consumes crawl budget, and gives Google a sample of your quality that includes your worst work.
That is the mechanism behind sites whose good pages underperform. Nothing was penalised; the good pages are simply competing while surrounded by a hundred pages that say nothing.
- Improve it, if the topic deserves a page and this one falls short.
- Merge it with a related page, if neither has enough to stand alone.
- Noindex it, if it must exist for users but has nothing for search.
- Delete it and 410, if nothing links to it and nobody reads it.
When short is correct
A definition, a status code reference, a specific error message and its fix — these are complete in a few hundred words, and padding them out makes them worse. The pages that most reliably rank for narrow technical questions are frequently the shortest results on the page, because they answer immediately. Judge against the question, not a counter. - There is no number. Google has repeatedly said word count is not a ranking factor. Write what the question needs and stop.

- Longer pages often rank for competitive terms because those questions need more explanation, not because length itself helps. Padding a short answer does not reproduce the effect.

- Auto-generated and doorway pages violate the guidelines and can attract a manual action. Ordinary thin pages are not penalised — they just do not rank and dilute the rest of the site.
- Should I delete thin pages?
- Improve, merge, noindex or delete, in that order of preference. Deleting is correct when nothing links to the page and nobody reads it.
