Ecommerce SEO Audit Checklist: Products, Variants, Facets & Stock
Ecommerce audits are URL-policy audits. The hardest decisions concern variants, filters, stock states, and duplicated catalog paths—not title length.

Build a catalog URL inventory before crawling
List product, category, subcategory, brand, variant, filter, sort, search, pagination, campaign, discontinued, and out-of-stock states. For each type, decide whether it should be discoverable, indexable, canonical, and included in the sitemap. Without this policy, technical fixes will contradict one another.
| URL type | Typical policy | Exception |
|---|---|---|
| Primary product | Indexable self-canonical | Remove when permanently unavailable with no substitute |
| Variant | Canonical to primary product | Indexable if the variant has distinct demand/content |
| Useful category/brand | Indexable self-canonical | Noindex if empty or duplicate |
| Filter/sort | Controlled crawl, usually non-indexable | Curated landing page for proven demand |
| Internal search | Noindex and out of sitemap | Rarely a planned landing page |
| Pagination | Crawlable self-consistent pages | Alternative architecture with complete crawlable category links |
Test faceted navigation as a URL generator
Use the dedicated faceted-navigation guide when filters create an effectively infinite crawl space.
- 1Use the interface to combine filters in different orders and compare resulting URLs/content.
- 2Crawl parameter patterns and count how many return 200, canonical elsewhere, noindex, or duplicate content.
- 3Check whether internal links expose every combination and whether robots blocks prevent Google seeing canonical/noindex.
- 4Keep only combinations with search demand, inventory depth, unique intent, and maintainable content as landing pages.
- 5Normalize parameter order and redirect or suppress alternate forms so each state has one URL.
Audit product-page uniqueness and trust
- Replace manufacturer boilerplate with useful specifications, fit/use guidance, compatibility, media, delivery, returns, and genuine review context.
- Keep title, H1, canonical, Product schema name, price, currency, availability, and visible offer synchronized.
- Expose variants and availability accessibly; do not hide essential product information behind interaction-only widgets.
- Link to parent categories, compatible products, alternatives, and guides with descriptive anchors.
- Avoid creating indexable pages for combinations that differ only by a query parameter and identical copy.
Choose a lifecycle for stock changes
Redirecting every discontinued product to its category is a soft-404 pattern and frustrates users. A redirect should preserve the original task, not merely keep the request on the site.
| State | Recommended handling |
|---|---|
| Temporarily out of stock | Keep 200, show status and alternatives, update schema availability |
| Seasonal and returning | Keep URL, explain return timing, retain internal links |
| Permanently discontinued with close replacement | 301 to the true substitute when intent matches |
| Permanently discontinued with useful demand/history | Keep an informative page with alternatives |
| Gone with no value or substitute | 404/410 and remove from sitemap/internal links |
Performance testing must include shopping interactions
Measure category and product templates separately on mobile. For LCP, inspect the primary product/hero image and CDN transformation. For INP, test variant selection, filters, add-to-cart, galleries, search suggestions, and consent. For CLS, watch price, stock, reviews, recommendations, and promotional bars arriving late.
Prioritize ecommerce findings by template reach
- 1Fix index blockers, wrong canonicals, server errors, and schema/visible-data conflicts on revenue templates.
- 2Constrain facet crawl space and remove non-canonical URLs from links and sitemaps.
- 3Repair empty categories, orphan products, broken pagination, and discontinued-product handling.
- 4Improve content on categories/products that already show demand or impressions.
- 5Run DomainLens on representative states after deployment, then monitor GSC by URL pattern and product feed diagnostics where relevant.
